Unit 10, Final Blog...

I hate to be formal on the blog, because it somewhat defeats the purpose, however there are several questions to be addressed this unit, and I don't want to miss anything, so here it goes...

Review your unit 3 personal assessment of your psychological, physical, and spiritual well-being. Reflect on these areas . How did you score yourself on a scale from 1 to 10 in unit 3? How do you score yourself now? Has the score changed? Why or why not?

In my initial assessment of my psychological, physical, and spiritual well-being I was completely honest with myself which ultimately led me to a lower score in almost all areas, I did this intentionally simply because I was acknowledging that there was plenty of room for change. Fast forward to the end of the term and my scores did go up in all areas however I did not rate myself a 10 in any of the areas of well-being, this is because although I felt I have grown tremendously throughout the course of this term I still feel like I am a work in progress, I don't believe in perfection so in all honesty I don't think that a 10 is achievable, there should always be room for improvement.

Review the goals and activities you set for yourself in each area. Have you made progress toward the goals? Explain.

My goals were to learn more about who I am and lead myself to a life which is more fulfilling while learning to simply let the small stuff in life roll off my shoulders, all of this taking place so that I can better serve those I love, and have a better appreciation for who I am as a person and human being. I absolutely feel like I have made progress, I can't necessarily say that I am a changed person, but I am "changing" as we speak. I have a new found love for life, and I now have the ability to look at life in a completely different life, and release thoughts of unhappiness or stress in an effortless manner which is great. I continue to work on my goals and accomplish them over time.

Have you implemented the activities you chose for your well-being in each of the three areas? Explain.

I have implemented the activities I chose however I would like to increase the frequency of the activities especially the loving-kindness activity, I see the most value in this one and I really enjoy it.

Summarize your personal experience throughout this course. Have you developed improved well-being? What has been rewarding? What has been difficult? How will this experience improve your ability to assist others?

I actually took this course as an elective simply because it was different from anything I have ever taken in the past, I also took it because I had an interest in helping identify and grow my inner self in an effort that I can better help and guide others. My entire life since I was a small child I have had the overwhelming passion to help others and make a difference in this world, although I have spent most of my life trying to identify how exactly this will take place, I have finally found that place in my life where I have the opportunity to forever change the lives of children and families that are affected by physical and sexual abuse, and ultimately change the way our community views and deals with this grim topic, so I'm living my dream but I still had a void, how could I give more to these people in need? This course allowed me to take a step back and identify who I am deep down inside, what ailments in my life are troublesome, how I can better deal with stress, and ultimately how I can accomplish optimal health so that I can give 100% of myself to these people in need. This course has been a learning curve for me, I have had ups and Downs there are concepts that I easily understood and ones that I failed to understand, but I pushed myself towards that end goal, and I can honestly say that ten weeks later I truly feel like a new person, I really look at life in an entirely new light, things are different, the small stuff in life seems to roll off my shoulders, and not only am I happier as a person, I am noticing those around are happier as well. I would recommend this course to just about anybody who is willing and open to make a change in their life.

I wish you all the very best in your future endeavors...

Unit 9 Project

       I.            Introduction:

Why is it important for health and wellness professionals to develop psychologically, spiritually and physically? What areas do you need to develop to achieve the goals you have for yourself?

It is important for health and wellness professionals to develop psychologically, spiritually and physically so that they are living a life of optimal health and well-being and they are guiding their patients by example. In order for a health care professional to be successful in their field, it is necessary that they understand the process in full and they can teach from experience, which will gain them not only their patient’s trust but their respect as well. The saying you need to “practice what you preach” is so appropriate especially in this field, when adapting to this new lifestyle it becomes a learning process, in most cases people are visual learners and they need to see proof that a particular method does indeed work and can be successful, by leading through example this can be achieved and the lifestyle can be sustained over time. It is also important to keep in mind as a health care professional that each and every patient is uniquely different, therefore their plan of care and treatment needs to be tailored to meet the needs of them as an individual, this is important because all too often a provider can get “stuck” in their ways and find a method that works well, however it’s important to keep in mind that just because one method works for one individual does not mean it will work for everyone.

The areas in my life that I need to develop in order to achieve my personal goals are actually a combination of spiritual, psychological, and physical, I have included all three because I am acknowledging that I am not perfect and there is certainly room for growth and change in all aspects of my life. Spiritually I would like to have a stronger connection with my faith, I am building on this aspect of my life, the further I ponder this thought the more whole I feel, life tends to lose much of its meaning when you lose sight of the power greater than yourself, so spirituality is very important, and continues to be a learning process in my life. Psychologically, I would like to continue on the path that I am currently on because I have truly come leaps and bounds, I have learned to appropriately deal with stress and disappointment in my life, and I have learned to act and not react in situations that are overwhelming, because of this my life and quality of life have improved on levels that I cannot begin to explain. I do still struggle with some issues of self confidence, although I have spent my entire life setting and meeting goals, and I have become very successful on both a personal and professional level, I still struggle with feeling worthy of others respect, and I often feel like I don’t meet the standards of others, even after being reassured by others that I am respected and just as worthy as the next person, this is an area of my life that I will continue to work on in an effort to improve this aspect of my life and to build my confidence. Physically there is a large amount of room for change, I have been at a point in my life where I am physically fit and I think that overall it improves the quality of a person’s life because you are able to enjoy more, I would specifically like to improve this aspect of my life so that I can keep up with my kids, work, school and life in general without feeling exhausted all of the time, I think this improvement would help me achieve my goals in a more timely manner. I believe that acknowledging the fact that there is room for change is the first step in life, and it creates an environment for being open-minded which increases the chance of being successful in your accomplishments.

    II.            Assessment:

How have you assessed your health in each domain? How do you score your wellness spiritually, physically, and psychologically?

I believe that my growth spiritually, physically, and psychologically have grown at different rates, and I expect that trend to continue, I believe that each of these aspects of my life build off of one another, and in order for me to be successful in one area of well-being, I must improve or maintain another area of my health, not only do they build off of one another but I also believe they complement each other. Assessment in general is a tool that can help us improve and evaluate our current life, Dacher describes assessment as the tool we need to choose to transform our health and life from conventional to integral, from ordinary to precious (Dacher, 2006). On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being completely unhealthy and 10 being optimal health, I think I would rate my overall well being at a 6, this is lower than what most people would rate their self however, I am simply acknowledging that there is a great deal of room for change in my life and within myself.

On a physical level of wellness I know that I can make improvements in so many ways, I'm actually not sure where to even start, however I think I would rate myself at a 6 for this area, my current method of staying "active" involves chasing after three growing kids, work, volunteering, and juggling life, and the juggling of life always seems to be in fast forward mode, I know that is not good, but it is simply how my life works at this given moment, at some point in the future I would really like to take on an actual physical activity that I am dedicated to.

On a psychological level I am going to rate myself at a 8, I have a special way of keeping myself psychologically healthy and the system I have works for me, and because of this I am able to live a very happy life, I can't say that there is a proven "method for madness" however it works for me and my life, I am a deep thinker and a great problem solver, I have also vowed to myself not to let negativity weigh on my shoulders, so I have methods of dealing with that stress and finding useful ways to deal with it, my goal in this area is to continue to work on my problem solving and to share my methods with others who value seeing life in a different light.

On a spiritual level I'm going to rate myself at a 7, I can't necessarily say that there is one area of my life that completes my overall spiritual well being, however I do truly believe that there are many aspects of my life that collaborate and create something very beautiful for me, I have a deep connection with my family and friends along with a strong connection to my religion, the one aspect of spirituality that I would like to improve for my future is identification and self worth, I would like to continue to gain a better appreciation for who I am, and what I am capable of, the result of this is being able to then share that positive experience with the world.

 III.            Goal Development:

List at least one goal you have for yourself in each area, Physical, Psychological (mental health) and Spiritual.

Physical: My goal in this area is to create a better awareness and love for my physical body, and learn to love what I have been blessed with. I have been a healthy eater my entire life, and I value that I respect my body enough to make smart food choices, it also helps the way I feel. I am going to commit myself to becoming more physically active, and being creative in finding a physical activity that I enjoy and can do for a long period of time. Long-term I would like to lose weight and become physically fit; it has been much too long since I have seen muscle definition in my body. Meeting my goal will take work and dedication, but I am up for the challenge.

Spiritual: In an effort to expand on this goal I would like to have a better knowledge and general understanding of my religion, so that I can better apply these principles in my everyday life. I would also like to become more in touch with my inner self and identify who I am deep down inside, by letting go of the ailments in my outer life that weigh me down. I would also like to have a greater spiritual connection with those people in my life that are near and dear to my heart. This aspect is one of the most important aspects of my life because it speaks volumes about my character, who I am as a person, what I want out of life, and what I have to offer the world.

Psychologically: This area for me is surprisingly the easiest area to set goals in my life, I think this is because I am so head strong, I have a good handle on my psychological well-being, this has come throughout my life through experience and trial and error. It is extremely important to me to keep it together mentally and release negative emotion and feelings as they approach before they weigh me down and cause harm to me or my life. I have learned to be a problem solver and set goals for myself which allow me to be challenged, as a result I have created a stable mental environment and proved to myself over and over again that I am most capable of achieving anything I set my mind to. My favorite quote is “Never settle for anything less than your dreams” (Unknown), this quote is the story of my life and I share this philosophy with just about everyone I care about, life is mysterious and there is always the unknown, but we can achieve what we set out to achieve in life depending on how hard we want to work for it. Pushing forward in life and never giving up on something you believe in is very important. I have learned that life has so much to offer and not to sell myself short by getting “stuck” and just settling in life.

 IV.            Practices for Personal Health:

What strategies can you implement to foster growth in each of the following domains; Physical, Psychological, and Spiritual. Provide at least two examples of exercises or practices in each domain. Explain how you will implement each example.

Physical: I plan to create a physical activity goal which will force me to become committed and teach me to love my body again. I plan on joining our local health club and joining my good friend who is a Beachbody coach at the gym at least four days a week for a high cardio workout. Aside from the gym I would like to get my kids and husband involved, and start taking family walks, this is something we did in the past and we all found it very enjoyable and a good opportunity to communicate, while being physically active. I plan to build my strength and endurance over time, in an effort to alleviate some of the fatigue and muscle weakness I currently have. Although I am a seemingly healthy eater I do have a weakness for sweets, so I plan to give up the sweets and save them for special occasions. Bringing my friends and family onboard with these new strategic goals is important for sustainability, and support. I would like to learn my limits and push myself in an effort to prove my inner strength and dedication.

Spiritual: My main goal for spirituality is to gain a better knowledge and understanding of my religion, so that I can be at peace, share these values with my family, and live the principles of my religion in my everyday life. To achieve this goal  I am going to commit myself to attending church on a weekly basis, and even possibly an adult bible study group. I think that the bible study group would be very important because it would give an up close look at the religion and its meaning. Aside from attending church I would also like to begin reading the bible again, understanding the word of god and what it means in my everyday life. I hope to make both of these practices a regular part of my everyday life and I hope that it will improve my value and outlook on my faith.

Psychological: My goal for this aspect of my life is to continue keeping a positive outlook on life and humanity, always give others the benefit of the doubt before jumping to conclusions and ridding myself of negative emotions and feelings as they enter my mind. I plan on achieving this through regular meditation and deep thinking. Throughout this course I have found two exercises, loving-kindness and calm abiding to be extremely effective in my life and I can only see them continuing to improve the quality of my life and my mental health.  These exercises allow me to slow down my thoughts focus on my inner self, and yet acknowledge the emotions that are plaguing me, I can address each emotion and feeling as they enter my mind, deal with them single handedly and then release them back out of my mind, this creates a feeling of freedom for me and allows me to keep a clear mind.

    V.            Commitment:

How will you assess your progress or lack of progress in the next six months? What strategies can you use to assist in maintaining your long-term practices for health and wellness?

Assessing my progress over the next six months will be crucial to my overall success in these commitments. I plan to continue to stay motivated through my actions and through my results. My biggest strategy is going to be to keep a personal journal where I can track both my struggles and my successes, this will not only hold me accountable for my actions but will also be a great tool for assessing my progress as time goes on, I think a journal will help keep me on track. By revisiting my journal entries I will have a very clear idea of the “need to know facts” such as why I am committing myself to these changes, what I am capable of as a person, and how the changes directly affect my life. Along with my journal I will continue to use visualization techniques which I find extremely helpful in accomplishing my goals, because it gives me a very clear cut idea of what I am aiming for in life. I think that a culmination of all of my efforts will be motivation; each area of my life will build and upon each other and positive change will soon follow.

Unit 8

It's hard to believe unit 8 is already here and we are wrapping up this term, it has gone by extremely fast, I guess the statement is true "time flies when you are having fun", this course has been a great learning experience for me.

Out of all of the exercises and practice sessions we have done, there have been some that I have really liked and found beneficial and there have been some that I found useless for me as an individual. I can tell you that I had a very difficult time initially with all of the exercises mainly because I found it difficult to concentrate, however it was certainly a learning process, as with many things in life, the more I practiced the better I got and the more useful I began to find the exercises, not only did I find them useful but they also began to be effective as well, and I was able to start seeing my life in a different light, and I was able to find myself more capable of dealing with stressors and hard times in my life. I really enjoyed the loving-kindness and meditation exercises, I think these were the most beneficial for me because I have spent my whole life wanting to "save the world" and save everybody that is in need, these thoughts can be overwhelming at times because I know as a human this is not possible, however by doing these exercises it gives me a way to organize my thoughts and direct my attention in ways that can be emotionally dealt with.

I have chose to continue to do these exercises because I have found them to be beneficial and I see positive changes taking place in my life, I have a different outlook on life, and I not only see others in a different light but I see myself differently as well, my view of the world is changing and that to me is entirely worth all of this.

Here's to another fabulous week my friends!

Unit 7

I cannot believe we are in unit 7 already, where has the time gone? This was another interesting unit and each week I am finding myself more and more excited to start off the unit in anticipation for growing within myself, I feel like I have come a long way since I first began this class. I have to be perfectly honest, when I started this course I was thinking how silly all of this meditation was, and always had a difficult time understanding how others would find this practice useful. I can now say seven weeks later that it is much more than just "meditation" it is a practice of reaching that inner peace within yourself, and releasing negative emotions and feelings as they enter your mind. This weeks practice exercise mindful meditation was one of the most useful ones I have done to date, I found this to be very relaxing. The part that gets me really excited is the fact that each time I sit down to do the meditation it is becoming easier and easier, I am becoming relaxed much quicker and ultimately I am finding each meditation more and more valuable. I still have not perfected this and I truly believe this will all come over time, however I have come a long ways from the first time I sat down to meditate, when my mind was going a hundred miles an hour I could not concentrate on anything, it's much different now. As a result I feel like I have grown tremendously, I am able to really look at life in such a different light, the small insignificant things that used to really bother me now just roll off my shoulders, I am conscious of my feelings and what they mean, and I am conscious of others around me, everybody that I am in contact with in this life has some sort of meaning to me, as does my life as a whole, and I value those characteristics, because they have gone unnoticed for far to long.

The quote "One cannot lead another where one has not gone himself'" is very well said and something I describe as a model to live by. We cannot encourage others or expect others to believe in our methods or logic if we have not first practiced what we preach. Life all in itself is an example; we learn by experience and through wisdom and through trial and error. When we have practiced a certain logic or method in life it better prepares us to teach others and gives us a certain sense of credibility, people can see the "fruits of our labor" and they will respect and trust our judgement and guidance.

Here's to another week of learning and progress!

Unit 6

Okay, we are on to unit 6, and the information is still pouring in, what is shocking is how intesting the lessons have been throughout this course.

I have to say that this loving-kindness exercise was probably one of the best exercises I have done throughout this course, I have lived my entire life feeling like I am here to serve others and make a difference in this world. I think as human beings we are sometimes left with feelings that we are not proud of, we can become angry, have feelings of jealousy towards others, overall these feelings can weigh heavy on the mind, body, and spirit, this exercise was very helpful in aiding me through negative feelings, and emptying my heart of feelings that I feel that are sometimes beyond my control. Repeating the following statements, brought a me a certain level of peace and serenity.

May all individuals gain freedom from suffering.
May all individuals find sustained health, happiness, and wholeness.
May I assist all individuals in gaining freedom from suffering.
May I assist all individuals in finding health, happiness, and wholeness.

With the Integral Assessment I felt a bit scattered, however I did allow my body and mind to rest and ease into a state where I was able to release all mental activity, I have identified through this exercise that the area of my own life that needs healing is self gratification and confidence, I have spent my entire life building others up and encouraging others to reach their absolute best in life, to never settle etc, but when it comes to myself I am all to often lacking confidence and left doubting my abilities, I have identified that I am most capable of accomplishment simply by reflecting back on my life, so why the doubt? I have vowed to myself to give myself more credit, and reward myself for the accomplishments and good doing I have done in this life.

I wish you all the best going into unit 7!

Unit 5

It's hard to believe we are half way there already, this term seems to be flying on by...

I enjoyed this exercise because it focused on breathing, I was intrigued when Dacher explained that you are able to control the mind and thoughts with breathing, he states at one point "if you slow the breathing, you slow the mind", (Dacher, 2006). That concept is very interesting to me because it once again proves that we as humans do indeed have control of our minds. The breath is the focal point, however as thoughts, and feelings approach, they are still acknowledged and then dismissed, and again the focus goes back to the breathing and not to the thoughts at hand. I liked this exercise because I am so easily distracted, as I was in the last exercise I was able to get side tracked and distracted very easily and as a result I found it very hard to get back to the exercise, however with this exercise it was about gaining control of the mind and having the ability to re-focus on the breathing, when I would focus on the breathing and not the distraction I found it very easy for me to get back into the exercise. I can't say that my mind ever reached a full complete stillness during this exercise, however I think if I continued to practice that this would come over time, I do have a very busy mind and I have acknowledged that there is a lot going on "up there" even when I want it to simply calm down and rest, in fact; that's when it seems to be the most active. I really believe that for me this exercise will be very useful if I continue to do it and really give it my all, I am curious to see where my mind can take me, but more so I am interested in identifying how much control I have over my thoughts and feelings.

Spiritual, physical, and mental wellness to me are an "all-in-one" package, I truly believe that in order for one to be successful and effective, the others must be not only in place but functioning properly. Spiritual wellness is important because it grounds me with a belief that is greater than myself, mental wellness is one of the most important because I am not only able to identify who I am as a person, but come face to face with my emotions and feelings, address my inner demons and allow room in my mind for change, physical is important because if I am not physically healthy and happy I am not able to accomplish success in the other areas of well-being. Maintaining these three areas of my life is a job all in itself, for many people its just something that is simply "there" and not looked into much further than that, but once you shoot for a healthier happier life, it all comes into focus very clearly, and it becomes a realization that it takes work.

I wish you all the best this unit.

Unit 4

Describe your experience. Did you find it beneficial? Difficult? Why or why not? Would you recommend this to others? Why or why not?

This was an interesting unit for me simply because this is all very new to me. I think that we each have our own way of relaxation and getting in touch with our inner self, however actually sitting down and having a method for which we can connect with yourself and find that inner peace, is something foreign to most people, including me. I live a very busy lifestyle with three kids, (soon to be four), full time work, and full time school, so "me" time is essentially non existent at this point, but I did want to dedicate myself to this exercise and give it a shot. I think that the exercise overall was relaxing, however I can see how it would have been much more beneficial if I had an area to escape to that was entirely silent so I could concentrate on nothing more than me, but reality is I was distracted and I didn't feel like I was able to fully dedicate myself to the exercise, therefore I don't think I was able to receive the full benefit of it. I think it would depend on the person whether or not I would recommend this to them, I say that because not everybody would feel comfortable doing this exercise.

What is the concept of "mental workout"? What does research indicate are the proven benefits of a mental workout? How can you implement mental workouts to foster your psychological health?

A mental workout is an activity that allows a higher state of awareness, when we do mental workouts we are able to access the more subtle levels of the mind. I believe that a mental workout is when we are able to essentially train our brain in areas that we want or need to, and create a better sense of who we are internally, by allowing us to gather our thoughts and feelings and concentrate on the here the now and the "me", which very rarely happens in life. The proven benefits of a mental workout is that it creates a greater sense of awareness and that we gain access to the more subtle levels of the mind, witnessing consciousness, the mental state of calm abiding, and the pure awareness of a unity consciousness (Dacher, 2006). I think that mental workouts can be fostered into your psychological health first by being open-minded and accepting, if you are not willing to make a change or give it a try you will certainly not be successful in your endeavor, so this is very important. The whole process of mental workout is very new to me, so it is a completely new learning process.

I wish you all another great week of fun and learning.
